Extension of Burao Vocational Training Center

Location: Burao
Implementing Agencies: Somali Canadian Education and Development Organization (SCERDO) &
Candle Light for Health and Education

Background
Somaliland people have experienced successive civil wars for the last decade, this resulted political, social economic upheavals in the country, and people became either refugees in eastern Ethiopia refugee camps and some western countries, or displaced in the war-torn areas in the country.

During the years of civil war, there was a total absence of systematic education for the school age children and youth. This led the youth to join different militia groups in the country or to stay in refugee camps hopelessly.
Now, Somaliland is just recovering from the war effects, peace and security was restored and nearly all government bodies were established. The youth, who previously joined to militia are now putting their weapons aside and need to be arranged in a planned demobilization program.

In consideration of what is mentioned above, Candle Light for Health and Education established vocational training center in Burao, the capital of togdheer region. The project was at first funded by NOVIB and later contributed by other agencies such as UNICEF, UNDP and UNHCR.

Burao Vocational Training Center
The center was officially opened on September 1998 and has been functioning since then. It consists of four classrooms, two of which are computer and typing labs. The other two are used for the other subjects.
Subjects taught in the center are english, somali, math, accounting, secretarial, computer and typing. It also taught secondary education to 40 students in order to enable them to pursue higher education. It is worth to mention that the first patch of computer and typing students, who were 113 in number, was graduated in March 1999 and fortunately some of these graduates contains 460 students who are more than its capacity.

Problem Statement & Justification
As previously mentioned, Burao Vocational Training Center consists four classrooms and office, two of the four classrooms are exclusively used for typing and computer studies, the other two are used for the rest of the subjects taught in the center.

On the other hand, the demand of enrollment is very high, so it is obvious that these four classrooms are not enough for the students who want to apply the center. It also became clear, since the town is big and constantly growing, that it is difficult for many of Burao residents to reach the existing center.
Therefore, we suggest this proposal to extend the center by establishing attached center in another part of the town.
